A HUNGARIAN national is ‘fighting for her life’ in Mayo General Hospital after her car crashed over the quay wall in Newport on Sunday morning. The 34-year-old woman inadvertently drove the Ford Ka over the quay wall sometime between 8.30 and 8.40am on Sunday morning. An elderly man who was walking in the area saw the incident and called the emergency services who fought frantically to rescue the woman from the car which was submerged in the water. Approximately half an hour after the car entered the water a local diver retrieved the unconscious woman and she was rushed to Mayo General Hospital where she remains on a life support machine. A spokesperson for the Gardaí told The Mayo News that the woman was the only person in the car and she remains in Mayo General Hospital ‘fighting for her life’. The Mayo News has learned that the Ford Ka was recently bought by the woman and it is thought she may not have been too familiar with driving the car when travelling along the narrow roadway at Newport Quay. The car was retrieved from the water and examined and it is understood there was no fault with the car. The Hungarian woman has been living in Newport for the past six years and has worked in a pub in the town. The Garda spokesperson described the incident as a ‘very sad case’ and a technical examination of the scene was carried out. Anyone who was in the area on Sunday morning and may have seen something is asked to contact Westport Garda Station on 098 25555.
