SPECIAL OLYMPICS Ray Moylette and Cora Staunton helped to launch the annual Special Olympics Ireland collection day in Castlebar last week.
Ray and Cora support Special Olympics cause
TWO of Mayo’s sporting heroes came out in support of local athletes to help launch Special Olympics’ annual Collection Day. The annual Collection Day will take place throughout Ireland on Friday, April 27 and Mayo ladies star Cora Staunton and boxing champion Ray Moylette were on hand to help launch the Mayo event in Castlebar last week. Collection Day is the biggest annual fundraising event in aid of Special Olympics Ireland and is hugely important to the organisation. The aim of the day, which is proudly supported by eircom, is to raise as much funds as possible to build and support the programme of sports training and competition offered by Special Olympics Ireland so that every person with an intellectual disability has the opportunity to be involved. 250 volunteers will be needed throughout Mayo to look after the collection points in Ballina, Castlebar, Swinford, Kiltimagh, Ballinrobe, Westport, Belmullet, Ballyhaunis and Claremorris. Myra Merrick, Regional Director Special Olympics Connaught said: “It is only with the support of the local community that Special Olympics can be a place of extraordinary achievement and opportunity for people with an intellectual disability. “Our organisation is about fun, friendships, team spirit, and about working together. It’s fitting therefore that some of Mayo’s finest sports stars are supporting our sporting heroes.“ “This is our biggest annual fundraising event and as such is of huge importance to us. Every donation we receive on April 27 will help us to further realise our promise of changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities throughout Connaught”.
