Titanic documentary maker thanks Addergoole

Emphasising the special feature of her new documentary-drama ‘Waking the Titanic’ which will be shown on TG4 on Friday next, April 6 Gillian Marsh has said it was created with the objective of portraying a new and intimate perspective of the Titanic tragedy.
“I could never have made it without the support of the people of Addergoole and Lahardane. We had real local farmers who were filmed cutting turf and saving hay and this really added to the authenticity and the realism in the production.
The stories encapsulates the excitement of local people enthusiastically and dynamically setting out on the voyage of a lifetime buoyed by the return of local woman Catherine McGowan from America who had been very successful over there.
In 1912 fourteen young people ranging in age from 17 to 32 set about making plans to emigrate. Focusing on the drama of anticipation and the thrill of the eventual voyage from Cobh, the story of the Addergoole 14 is told using accounts handed down to family members from people of the time and interviews with the descendants of those who survived.
‘Waking the Titanic’ will be shown on TG4 on Friday 6 next at 8pm and again on Saturday April 14 at 9.10pm.
The Mayo Titanic Cultural week will begin this Easter Sunday in Lahardane with a reenactment of the trip from Lahardane to Castlebar Railway Station by the Addergoole 14. Former President Mary Robinson will officially open the week’s events.
