Work on Castlebar Town Park to begin

Work on the long-awaited Castlebar Town Park will commence immediately, Castlebar Town Council have confirmed.
The green space located close to the Rowan Drive and Knockthomas housing estates has been targeted for development as a community amenity for some years but yesterday (Monday), Town Clerk Marie Crowley told councillors that approval had been secured.
In a memo to councillors, she said that recent funding of €103,000 for a multi-purpose games area (MUGA) at the Town Park has been matched by Castlebar Town Council and approved by the Department of the Environment. As part of the funding conditions the facilities must be completed by the end of this year to work is to commence immediately.
A traffic management plan will be put in place immediately to help to minimise the disruption to traffic on Springfield road.
The Town Park project will include the MUGA facility, a skate park, playground, an open space area for informal games or events and outdoor fitness equipment at various points around the perimeter of the park.
Three CCTV cameras will be located in the park and a new carpark will be constructed beside Scoil Raífteirí. Seven stakeholders were consulted with before the project came to this stage.
Councillors welcomed the proposed town park.
The Town Park development is part of the wider River Walk project.
