Louth man charged with Achill break-in

A Louth man appeared before last week’s sitting of Achill District Court where he was formally charged with offences in relation to the false imprisonment of a couple in Achill last year.
Michael McMahon of 3 Ashlawn, The Loakers, Blackrock, Co Louth was charged with aggravated burglary, assault causing harm and falsely imprisoning a person on February 14, 2010. The alleged offences took place at the Tower Road, Dooagh, Achill at approximately 8.30pm on the evening of St Valentine’s Day.
During the brief hearing, Sergeant Pat O’Hara explained that he met Mr McMahon before the court and charged him with the offences. Following the caution he said the defendant replied ‘No Comment’ to all three charges.
During an application for legal aid, the court heard that Mr McMahon (43) receives a weekly allowance of €223.70 which includes fuel and rent allowance. Mr McMahon said he does not own any property and when asked by Inspector Joe Doherty if he had any bank accounts ‘across the border’ or in Sweden, he replied ‘no’. Judge Mary Devins granted him legal aid.
Inspector Doherty explained that all offences were indictable matters and was seeking to have the defendant remanded on bail until the May 12 sitting of Achill District Court for him to be served with the book of evidence. Judge Devins agreed to the request.
Mr McMahon was arrested in Achill along with another person following the alleged incident and were brought to Westport Garda Station before being released the following day.
