THE remarkable achievements of the Carnacon ladies football squad will be recognised at the sixth annual Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars awards ceremony on Friday, December 3.
The undisputed queens of Mayo ladies football, who are currently in the midst of their preparations for an All-Ireland senior club final against Cork’s Inch Rovers on December 5, will be presented with the ‘Special Achievement’ award at the Mayo News charity banquet in Knockranny House Hotel on Friday week next.
Carnacon have been chosen for their unprecedented achievement in winning their eleventh successive Mayo senior ladies club football championship title this year.
Speaking to The Mayo News last night, Jimmy Corbett, Carnacon’s long-serving coach, said that he was delighted that the group had been selected for an award and paid tribute to ‘the girls’.
“It’s a great achievement alright,” he admitted. “The girls are so dedicated and committed to football. They work hard and they don’t like losing games.
“We’re delighted that The Mayo News have singled us out for recognition and it’s a great start to what will hopefully be an historic weekend for the Carnacon ladies club.
“We’ll be really getting down to brass tacks next week in terms of our preparations for the All-Ireland final but we’re in it to win it.”
At the moment Carnacon have no injury worries to concern them ahead of their clash with Inch Rovers in Banagher. However, three of their players (Noelle Tierney, Fiona McHale and Michelle Higgins) are currently in the USA while Natasha Beegan departs for Mexico on Friday. All four are due to be back in time for the All-Ireland decider.
“Noelle, Fiona and Michelle will be back early next week but Natasha is on holidays in Cancun and won’t be back in Ireland until two days before the match.
“Unfortunately, the All-Ireland was due to be played on Sunday, November 28 and she had made plans to go to Mexico the day after. Now she’s had to change her plans and work around the All-Ireland. Hopefully, everything will work out alright.”
Carnacon supporters can purchase tickets for the charity banquet by calling The Mayo News office on (098) 25311. All the proceeds from the night will be donated to Mayo Cystic Fibrosis.
