THEY may have relinquished the Mayo senior football championship title this season, but Charlestown will still have some cause for celebration at the sixth annual Club Stars event after Paul Mulligan finished as leading scorer in the Mayo SFC.
The versatile forward won The Mayo News ‘Golden Boot’ awards for both the ‘Overall Top Scorer’ and ‘Top Scorer from Play’ in the county senior championship last season.
In his five games for Charlestown, Mulligan shot 4-17 to pip Shrule/Glencorrib’s Conor Mortimer by a point. Of that final tally, 4-6 came from play, three points more than his brother, Anthony, and the prolific Mortimer managed from open play.
Meanwhile, Burrishoole also received some consolation after their County Intermediate final defeat when their sharp-shooter, Jason Doherty, topped the Mayo IFC ‘Overall Top Scorer’ charts with 2-30 from his six appearances.
However, Cill ChomΡin’s Derek Moran took the Mayo IFC ‘Top Scorer from Play’ award with an astonishing 5-4 from play in four matches.
An incredible 4-1 of his final tally came against Crossmolina ‘B’ in the group stages and proved vital in beating off the determined challenge of Burrishoole’s David Keane who finished second in the category.
Paul Mulligan, Jason Doherty and Derek Moran will each receive their Mayo News ‘Golden Boot’ awards at the Club Stars Banquet on Friday, December 3 at Knockranny House Hotel, Westport.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to Mayo Cystic Fibrosis and tickets can be purchased by calling The Mayo News office on (098) 25311.
