Kiltimagh native and head of Special Olympics Mary Davis has said she is considering running for President of Ireland.

KILTIMAGH native and head of the Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia, Mary Davis has said she is considering running for President of Ireland. Speaking at the weekend, Ms Davis said she would ‘seriously consider’ running for President of Ireland which will become vacant when Mary McAleese’s term in office comes to an end next year. Ms Davis said it would be a huge honour but stated that it was still early days. Ms Davis came to national prominence in 2003 when she acted as the Chief Executive of the Special Olympics World Games in Dublin. She was awarded the Person of the Year Award for her work for this event as well as her years of service with Special Olympics Ireland. She continues her role in the Special Olympics and is the current Managing Director of Special Olympics Europe and Eurasia. Meanwhile the current President of Ireland, Mary McAleese will be visiting Mayo today (Tuesday) where she will visiting both Ballina and Ballycastle. President McAleese will arrive in Ballycastle at 11am where she will officially open ‘Suífinn Way’ housing development and day-care centre for the elderly. She then travels to Ballina where she will officially open the Newman Institute’s Adult Education and Faith Formation Centre at 12.10pm.
