Newport butchers Seamus and Sean Kelly were the toast of Newport on Monday after receiving a coveted international award for their prizewinning pudding.

MAIN Street in Newport resembled the set of a Hollywood movie yesterday (Monday), as hundreds gathered to see Kelly’s butchers being bestowed with a Bronze Medal by ‘The Black Pudding Fraternity of Lovers of Good Food’ (Confrérie des Chevaliers Du Goute-Boudin)
The group, attired in medieval style robes, led a procession through the town, which was jam-packed with people from political circles, food lovers and others from all walks of life. Stalls lined the street as Newport came to a standstill to honour a local butcher family who have put the town on the national and world stage with their fine artisan foods.
It was noted that after a weekend of poor weather the sun was shining brightly on the festivities, as the group from Normandy paraded up Main Street where there was congratulations flowing for the Kelly family from Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Burke, and the many TD’s who had congregated for the unique occasion.
“It is strongly recognised that Kelly’s Butchers of Newport is a well-known food brand around County Mayo as well as around the rest of the country,” said Deputy Enda Kenny, leader of Fine Gael. “However,” he continued, “this prestigious award will place their produce on the international stage and it deserves to be recognised for what it is; world class food recognised by the best. I commend SeΡn and his staff for their excellent achievement and I hope that they continue to go from strength to strength in the future.”
Minister of State Dara Calleary also extended his congratulations to SeΡn and Seamus Kelly and their family, and stated that in difficult economic times, indigenous types of industry such as theirs are more important than ever before.
Kelly’s Butchers were also honoured at a Civic Welcome in the Mayo County Council Chamber yesterday evening.
