Aontú's Lawless makes late surge for Mayo seat

Knock-based teacher received 1,036 transfers from Murray to eliminate Lisa Chambers

Aontú's Paul Lawless is primed to take a seat in the Mayo constituency

Aontú candidate Paul Lawless is in a strong position to make history and take a seat in the Mayo constituency after transfers from Gerry Murray moved him clear of both Mark Duffy and Patsy O'Brien.

The Knock-based councillor received 1,036 transfers from Sinn Féin candidate Gerry Murray to put him on 7,612 which puts him in position for the fifth seat and 618 of his nearest challenger Independent Patsy O'Brien.

The results of the seventh count and the distribution of Murray's 4,091 votes did not result in any candidate being elected but former Fianna Fáil TD Lisa Chambers was eliminated.

Chambers's 6,709 votes are currently being distributed and it is expected she will elect Castlebar candidate Alan Dillon who is just 189 votes shy of the quota. Her Fianna Fáil running Dara Calleary is 2,113 short of the quota but he too will be expecting to receive enough of her transfers to reach the quota.

Ballina-based candidate Mark Duffy and Independent Patsy O'Brien will be fighting it out for Chambers' transfers to stay in the race with Duffy needing 94 more votes than O'Brien to avoid elimination.

Westport Fine Gael candidate Keira Keogh is 620 votes ahead of O'Brien but just two ahead of Lawless.
