Sinn Féin TD Rose Conway-Walsh made history again in Mayo when she followed up becoming the first female candidate to top the poll in Mayo to become the first female candidate to be the first declared elected in a Mayo General Election.
The Erris-based candidate was elected on the sixth count after she received 546 transfers from Stephen Kerr to put her 151 votes over the quota.
Conway-Walsh topped the poll after the first count with 10,117 but she had to bide her time before she was able to get the 1,695 votes needed to reach the quota of 11,812.
“I am delighted but it is down to all the people who put their trust in me to give me their number one vote. I always felt I had the work done but I never took anything for granted. The feedback all along was very positive,” she said.
Her election resulted in the elimination of her party colleague Gerry Murray whose total vote of 4,091 is currently being distributed.
Fine Gael candidate Alan Dillon is now 607 votes off the quota while Dara Calleary (FF) is now on 9192, while Keira Keogh (FG) has moved onto 7502
Aontú candidate Paul Lawless was the main beneficiary of Kerr's 3,684 transfers receiving 1,420 to put him on 6,576 votes just eight behind Mark Duffy (FG),78 votes behind Independent Patsy O'Brien and 164 ahead of Lisa Chambers (FF).
