The 16 Mayo candidates: Profiles on all General Election contestants

OCCUPATION: Public representative and farmer
ELECTION CHANCES: After topping the poll in the Claremorris Electoral Area in June in his first election as an Independent, running in this General Election was always going to be O'Brien's next venture. It is no secret that the Robeen native coveted a place on the Fine Gael election ticket in the past and he would love to get one over his former party who expelled him four years ago. However, the inclusion of his Hollymount neighbour Martina Jennings for Fine Gael has put a spanner in the works and he faces an almighty battle for votes in south Mayo. He will have to put himself ahead of Jennings after the first count to have a chance.
