The 16 Mayo candidates: Profiles on all General Election contestants

ELECTION CHANCES: The Louisburgh native surprised many people when he topped the poll in the Westport Electoral Area and became Independent Ireland's first councillor in Mayo. How he fares in the General Election will be of interest but he is up against it on a number of fronts. To win a seat, he will have to convince the people of Westport to back him ahead of Keira Keogh which is unlikely, and the Independent vote is likely to be divided between himself and Patsy O'Brien. He is unlikely to win a seat but he could get a sizable vote and he is another candidate whose transfers could have a bearing on who gets elected.
