Mayo 3-21

Leitrim 1-12

In Carrick on Shannon

It’s three wins from three for Keith Higgins’ Mayo U-20 side after they produced a fine performance to overcome Leitrim in Carrick. Across the hour, Mayo impressed while all of their 3-21 tally came from open play. The starting forwards played with great freedom on the evening as the six attackers combined for a tally of 3-13.

The visitors in their alternate purple kit got off to a strong start with Crossmolina duo Dylan Flynn and Kobe McDonald both scoring goals within the opening ten minutes.

Mayo built up a comprehensive lead as Tom Lydon impressed in attack with some neat finishing while captain Colm Lynch was excellent as the wing-back kicked six points including two superb two pointers.

Going in at the break, Mayo led 2-12 to Leitrim’s 0-5.

The reset button was hit at the break as Mayo came out while continuing to play some excellent free-flowing football. Substitute Conor Jordan fed attacker Darragh Beirne midway through the second period and the Claremorris player made no mistake as he rifled the ball to the roof of the net.

Keith Higgins introduced changes as time went on and the scoreboard kept ticking with Ardnaree’s Nathan Roddy getting on the board with a well worked score near the end.

Mayo face Galway next Wednesday evening in Castlebar as whoever wins, a spot in the Connacht final awaits. For the loser, a semi-final clash will await.

A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
