IT was a weekend jam-packed throughout the county as the Mayo LGFA leagues round two matches took place. In a high profile fixture in Division One, Westport travelled to neighbors Burrishoole in a repeat-tie of last year's senior championship semi-final, which Westport won, to eventually defend their county title.
This year, the team managed by Pop Geraghty are gearing up for a three-in-a-row charge and they're showing early on that they are up for the challenge. Westport left Newport on Sunday with their second win in the league campaign after a 2-9 to 1-4 victory.
A decent win with an eight point margin left Geraghty a happy man after the match: “Obviously we're delighted with the win against a strong Burrishoole team. Delighted with the performance and to have two wins out of two.”

Westport were able to blood more new talent on Sunday. After giving three players their senior debut in their round one win over MacHale Rovers, it was a premiere for Emma Conway and Maria McDonnell who got their first opportunity with the team in Newport.
Aoife Meaney with 1-3 was Westport's top scorer, as Christina MacEvilly 1-0, Fionnuala McLaughlin 0-2, Larissa Kelly 0-2, Katie Chambers 0-1 and Saoirse Byrne 0-1 contributed the remaining points.
Last year's senior championship finalists Knockmore have confirmed their early form from round one, when they dispatched Castlebar Mitchels 3-8 to 0-7. Last Sunday, Knockmore put another big score on their opponents, Kilmovee Shamrocks.
The team managed by Joe Brolly scored an impressive haul of 6-15 against Shamrocks who only managed to get 0-3 in reply.
If those early results are to be taken seriously, it might just be another year where everything leads towards a senior final between the two heavyweights Westport and Knockmore.
Furthermore in Division One, MacHale Rovers recorded their first win, beating Carnacon on a full-time score of 2-9 to 0-8. The win is the more impressive as MacHale Rovers had to do without their inter-county players Sinéad Walsh, Kayla Doherty and Charlie Reilly Benson, who were in Athlone with the Mayo senior team.
