A ruthless opening half display, was enough to power Mayo to victory in their crucial league tie on Sunday afternoon.
Four goals from the visitors in the opening half finished the game as a contest before the interval, and they scored two more after the break, to put the icing on the cake.
The Mayo women opened the scoring through a Sinead Walsh point and Aoife Geraghty doubled the lead seconds later, with a fine score.
Two quick fire goals from Lisa Cafferky and Geraghty put Mayo in a commanding position by the tenth minute, as they led 2-2 to 0-1.
Five minutes later, Walsh scored Mayo’s third goal, and that was quickly followed by their fourth from substitute, Saoirse Delaney.
To their credit, the home side didn’t lie down, and were rewarded for their efforts in the 29th minute, when Sarah Dillon scored a delightful goal with her right foot, following a brilliant mazy run by Rebecca Higgins.
Caoimhe Kilmurray and Sinead Cafferky then exchanged points before the interval, as Mayo led 4-7 to 1-3 at the break.
The visitors began the second half the same way they finished the first, and scored another goal inside the first few moments of the half, when Sinead Cafferky finished to an empty net, after an impressive run by Walsh.
Westmeath did kick six points on the spin in the final quarter, however Laura Moran scored an exquisite goal in the 59th minute, as Mayo ran out comfortable winners.
