3. The strength and depth of the Gerald’s squad

On a night, where the Castlebar students secured the Aonghus Murphy Cup, the sheer calibre of players the Gerald’s management were able to bring off the bench certainly caught the eye. On the starting team, they had seven players who have been part of the Mayo Minor side in recent times as Oisin Costello, Conor Coghill, Ben Joyce, Conor Hoban, Evan Walsh, Joe Forry and Rhys Neary all took their places.

In the second period, when the game was in the melting pot, Gerald’s turned to their bench as they introduced players who made a big difference. Among those substitutes were Patrick Garvey and Eoghan Dever who both featured for the Mayo minors last season. Luke Lydon (Tourmakeady) who was one of the most exciting players in the Mayo Junior Championship last year also featured from the bench.

Looking ahead, the Castlebar students face Tralee CBS in an All Ireland semi final but it would be unwise to back against Gerald’s who are one hour away from Croke Park. Rice College of Westport took that journey in 2018, as did St Colman’s last year but can St Gerald’s College claim the Hogan Cup and become the first Mayo school to do so since 1977? Why not.
