Last night, Tuesday January 14, the University of Limerick students had an impressive victory over a talented DCU side.
Among the UL side were many Mayo players while 16 of the 19 scores were kicked by Mayo representatives as Cian McHale, Conal Dawson, Frank Irwin, Jack Melvin and Sean Morahan all impressed.
Played in Dublin in the home of DCU, the defending Sigerson champions had Claremorris native Darragh Joyce playing from the start while Westport’s Finbar McLaughlin was introduced as a substitute.
However, UL powered to a hugely impressive win as Moy Davitts’ Cian McHale kicked 0-5 as did Westport’s Conal Dawson while Ballina’s Frank Irwin kicked 0-3. Davitts player Jack Melvin played in attack and finished up with a point. In defence Castlebar’s Sean Morahan was exceptional as he went up against Dublin’s Lorcan O’Dell. The Castlebar Mitchels man had a fine game while kicking two points. Parke’s Cathal Keaveney and Davitts’ Cathal Corless featured off the bench while Davitts’ Dylan O’Brien, Moy Davitts’ Colm McHale and Crossmolina’s Diarmuid Coggins were unused substitutes.
UL were victorious on a scoreline of 1-18 to DCU’s 0-12.
In Belfield, UCD had a fine win over Maynooth University. A goal in the 55nd minute from Ballina’s Sam Callinan was crucial for the Dublin based students as they progressed to the quarter final on a score-line of 3-16 to 2-14.
Parke’s Darragh Reilly also scored a goal while him and Claremorris’ Niall Hurley were hugely impressive in attack as the pair contributed to the hefty scoreline. Ballinrobe’s Diarmuid Duffy also started in defence for the side who are managed by Galway man John Divilly.
Tonight, Wednesday, there will be plenty of Mayo representation as ATU Galway face St Mary’s in Blanchardstown. In Dangan, the Maurice Sheridan managed University of Galway will face ATU Sligo who feature plenty of Mayo players.
