The Neale's Tom Lydon impressed for Mayo as he came off the bench to kick 0-6 in the win over Longford
On Sunday afternoon, Andy Moran’s first outing in charge of Mayo turned out to be a successful one as the Green and Red overcame Offaly 3-18 to 1-12. However, earlier in the day, Mayo’s development squad faced off against Longford. The youthful team came out victorious on a scoreline of 0-22 to Longford’s 2-11.
Longford, who are managed by former Mayo U-21 manager and Ballaghaderreen native Mike Solan, were competitive right throughout as Matthew Carey, whose father Kieran hails from Kiltane impressed in attack.
Parke duo Darragh Reilly and Cathal Keaveney were impressive across the game as Keaveney kicked four points in the first half while Reilly caused real problems for the Leinster side. The Neale’s Tom Lydon entered the play as a first half substitute and the talented attacker ended up with 0-6 including one two-pointer.
At half time, Mayo led narrowly 0-10 to Longford’s 1-6.
In the second half, Mayo extended the lead thanks to points from Liam Donoghue, Tom Lydon, Darragh Staunton and Darragh Joyce. Longford remained competitive as they continued to tag on singles.
Two long range points which warranted the orange flags from Jack Melvin and Lydon saw Mayo build up a considerate lead although the visitors reduced that with a well-taken goal late on.
The Mayo team that overcame Longford was: David Dolan (Balla); Brian O’Donovan (Balla), Luke Jordan (Ballina Stephenites), Ruairi Cullen (Charlestown); Colm Lynch (Parke), John MacMonagle (Castlebar Mitchels), Cathal Keaveney (Parke); Darragh Joyce (Claremorris), Brian O’Malley (Westport); Diarmuid Coggins (Crossmolina), Darragh Reilly (Parke), Liam Donoghue (Kiltane); Ronan Clarke (Moy Davitts), Kuba Callaghan (Ballaghaderreen), Niall Hurley (Claremorris)
