The only contest which required a vote by the delegates ended with joy for two well-known figures at the Mayo GAA Convention on Sunday.
The vote saw Liam Moffatt, Paddy McNicholas and John Walker vying for two seats on the Connacht Council previously filled by Moffatt and Paul Cunnane, who was taking over as Mayo GAA’s Communications Officer.
The vote saw delegates from every club casting their ballots and at the end, only two were left standing, Moffatt and McNicholas. The Crossmolina and Kiltimagh clubmen will both be representing the county on the provincial stage in 2026.
Moffatt has pulled on the Green and Red jersey on many an occasion, and also served as Mayo GAA chairman in recent years. He addressed the delegates and started by thanking his club, Crossmolina Deel Rovers, for their support, while also highlighting his keen interest in advocating for player welfare.
McNicholas, is also a former Mayo GAA chairman and Central Council delegate. He expressed his sincere thanks to his club and those who voted for him, as well as extending commiserations to outgoing Communications Officer John Walker, and committed himself to doing the best for the county.
Replacing Walker in the communications hot seat will be Paul Cunnane, stepping into a role he will be familiar with, having served in the role for five years and won a PRO of the Year award at the 2016 Gaelic Writers Awards.
“I’m hugely honoured to accept this role with Mayo GAA. This is not something I put my name forward for lightly, but I’ll do my best to work with all stakeholders.
“I’m very aware of trying to follow in the footsteps of John Walker, an award-winner who has done a huge amount of work in Mayo GAA for the last five years. His time, effort and dedication has been phenomenal.”
