U-21 A Championship Semi Final

Westport 2-21

Balla 1-7

In Westport

On a cold and windy morning, a superb Westport performance ensured their spot in next Saturday’s County Final where Claremorris await.

Balla’s Oisin Cronin opened the scoring but once Conal Dawson hit a two pointer for Westport, the hosts seemed to click as they raced into a lead. Dawson, a member of the Mayo Senior panel hit 1-8 in the opening half which included four two pointers.

Wind assisting, Westport scored an impressive 1-17 in the opening thirty minutes as seven different players got on the scoresheet in an impressive half of football from the boys in blue.

The visitors seemed to struggle for large spells as David Dolan kicked a two pointer which meant at half time, Westport led 1-17 to Balla’s 0-4.

Trailing by 16 at the break, Balla came out in the fresh half with a positive attitude as they were rewarded with a goal from Jamie Moran. However Westport’s Darragh Corrigan replied moments later as Westport were well on the way to victory.

In the second half, there wasn't much between the sides but on the grand scheme of things, it was Westport's day as they now look forward to a County Final in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park next Saturday afternoon.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
