CONNACHT INTERMEDIATE HURLING FINAL
Tooreen 3-21
Meelick Eyrecourt 2-12
In Roscommon
TOOREEN are back on top of the provincial pile again after a hugely impressive win over the Galway king-pins in Hyde Park this afternoon. The Mayo men were outstanding at times and played with great composure when required. They went to the half-time break with a seven-point lead and although they were never allowed rest on their laurels by Meelick Eyrecourt, they outscored the Galway men by five points after the interval.
Liam Lavin got Tooreen off to a great start with an early goal and they were never headed after that.
The first half ended with the Mayo champions leading, 3-11 to 2-7. They had caused the Galway champions all sorts of problems with their fleet-of-foot attack where Lavin was creating mayhem. The corner-forward ended the half with 2-2 to his name and was also fouled for a penalty, converted by Sean Kenny.
Meelick Eyrecourt stayed in the game with goals from John Fleming and Jarlath McEvoy, but on each occasion, Tooreen pulled away again with a stream of points. The Mayo men had eight different scorers in the opening half and were well-worth their impressive lead at the half-way mark.
Full-forward Nathan Earner looked to bring the Galway men back into it after the break as they earned a stream of frees during a hard-fought third quarter, but Tooreen, with Fergal Boland and Stephen Coyne prominent, kept them at arm's length.
Meelick Eyrecourt threw everything at the Mayo men but the Tooreen defenders, led by Oisin Greally, were giving absolutely nothing away.
The chasers made little or no impact on the leaders as time ticked away and Tooreen supporters almost raised the roof when Cathal Freeman came off the bench after flying in from Australia.
The final minutes were a joy for the Tooreen squad and supporters as they waited to be crowned champions and when the final whistle sounded the mighty men from East Mayo were headed for the All-Ireland semi-final.
