In Hyde Park, the Mayo kings will clash with Galway's Meelick-Eyrecourt with destiny on the line

The familiar road from Mayo to Hyde Park, Roscommon, beckons on Saturday when Tooreen will play Meelick-Eyrecourt in the Connacht Intermediate Club Final at 1.30pm.

This is the latest chapter in the history of the Mayo club who have won five Connacht titles since their major breakthrough when defeating Ballinderreen (Galway) in the 2017 showdown.

This will be their eighth time to contest the provincial decider and they came up just a little short on two occasions.

They lost out to Oranmore-Maree by 1-19 to 1-14 in the 2018 Connacht Final played in Athleague with the Galway team going on to capture All Ireland honours with a 2-18 to 1-15 win over Charleville from Cork.

Last year, Tooreen were pipped by Tynagh Abbey/Duniry in the provincial final in Hyde Park on a scoreline of 0-19 to 1-14 with the Galway side just losing out in a well-contested All-Ireland Final to Watergrasshill from Cork on a scoreline of 2-15 to 0-18.

The inclusion of Cathal Freeman on the panel for the game against St Gabriel’s last weekend took many by surprise. Cathal, one of the foremost players with the club for many years, has been away in Australia for the last three years.

Meelick-Eyrecourt bridged a gap of 28 years when defeating Kinvara in the Galway Final (1-16 to 0-16) and will certainly be on a high after bridging that long gap.

The area has a strong hurling base and was especially associated with Joey Salmon from Eyrecourt, a noted Galway senior hurler, in former decades.

Tooreen manager, Ray Larkin, himself a native of Galway and who resides in Kiltimagh, says things are shaping up nicely ahead of the big match.

“We know it will be a mammoth challenge for us. It always is when we play Galway clubs. Danny Huane, who was injured in the game against Four Roads two weeks ago, is a big loss to us but he is still a great lad to rally the troops.

"We will also have Sean Regan from Ballina back in the panel for the weekend. We are hoping for good support from Mayo for the big match on Saturday.”

The winners will play the Ulster champions in the All-Ireland semi-final later in the month.
