Brave Westport side denied Connacht glory after ten goal thriller

On a wet evening in the Connacht Centre of Excellence, an entertaining game was played out between two talented teams.

Connacht U-17 Club A Final

Oranmore-Maree 5-12

Westport 5-11

In Bekan

On a cold and damp evening in the Connacht Centre of Excellence, two exiting and talented sides contributed to a clash that was full of entertainment from start to finish on Friday evening.

Played on the immaculate surface in Bekan, both sides displayed a style of free-flowing football as across the hour, amazingly, the ball ended up in the net ten times.

Westport's Fiachra O’Cinnseala scored the opening goal after 12 minutes after excellent work from the impressive Ben Holmes. The Galway side replied with two fine goals from Cillian Costello and Barry Keating but just before half time Ben Holmes smashed the ball to the net after he made the most of his physicality with the Minor All Star rising highest while letting fly which saw an emphatic finish to the net.

After a superb opening 30 minutes of football, it was Westport that went in at the break leading 2-6 to Oranmore-Maree’s 2-5.

Within two minutes, Conan Reilly had the ball in the net for the West Mayo boys after Holmes teed him up. The talented bunch from the outskirts of Galway City caused problems throughout with their direct style of football seeming to work well as they rushed into a lead after scoring three quickfire goals but Westport battled gamely as the O’Cinnseala brothers, Fiachra and Fionn along with Holmes and Dara Dawson showed prominently for the boys in navy and blue.

With 10 minutes to go, Westport trailed but points from Dawson (two) and Holmes saw the gap reduced as wing-back Darragh Reynolds scored a classy goal which left just one between the teams.

However time was against the Mayo outfit as Oranmore-Maree claimed victory. In a fantastic spectacle of football, the winners saw their full forward line rack up a tally of 5-10 with this season’s Galway Minors Barry Keating, Joel Cullinane and Gavin Curran all impressing.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
