FOOTBALL MAYO SCHOOLS FLANAGAN CUP A CHAMPIONSHIP
St Muredach's Ballina 3-13
Rice College Westport 2-5
In Ardnaree
On a perfect afternoon for football, it really was a game of two halves when the Ballina based students locked horns with the Westport students. Rice College had Michael Mc Donnell and Ben Holmes operating around the danger zone and they worked well in tandem early on. Holmes teed up Mc Donnell for an early goal as the visitors raced into an early lead.
Ben Holmes hit to the net with a cool finish with 27 minutes on the clock but Dylan Sweeney immediately replied with a green flag for Muredach's. Going in at the break, Rice College were the happiest as they led 2-5 to Muredach's’ 1-3.
Under the guidance of Knockmore Senior player David Mc Hale, Muredach's were a different team in the second half as they dominated their West Mayo opponents. With Nathan Roddy, Oisin Mc Cann, Patrick Carr and Sean Foody all the fore, the boys in red soared to victory.
It was an extremely disappointing second half for the Rice College students as they failed to score throughout the entire half hour of action although chances fell their way. In the end, Muredach's ran out convincing winners.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's edition of The Mayo News.
