MAYO INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

Kilmeena 2-20

Kiltane 4-6

In Knockmore

From Buckfield to Boston and Myna to Milwaukee the people of Kilmeena are buoyant after a thrilling victory in today's county semi-final in Knockmore.

The men from the shores of Clew Bay were impressive and entertaining from first whistle to last and their display in the third quarter was stunning at times.

However, Kiltane played their part in this thriller. They were very disappointed to be on the end of some debatable refereeing decisions, yet overcame injuries to key players to fire home four goals and push Kilmeena all the way to the finish.

The Erris side began explosively and a goal from Adam Carabine had them in front early on. However Kilmeena were hugely impressive in attack and kicked a stream of points to retake the initiative before Charlie Ginnelly flicked home a second Kiltane goal after 20 minutes.

The see-saw nature of proceedings continued just before the break when Man of the Match, Liam Moore side-footed a rebound to the net to leave Kilmeena three clear at the break, 1-11 to 2-5.

That lead was hugely extended in the third quarter when John McGlynn, Moore, Darragh Slattery, Darragh Keaveney and Kevin Ryder all helped move the men in white into an eleven-point lead, 1-19 to 2-5, as they played some fine, flowing football.

It seemed all over at that stage, but Kiltane refused to die. Ginnelly drilled home a penalty and a minute later Mikie Sweeney scored his side's fourth goal. That closed the gap to five and moments later Ginnelly seemed to be tripped in the square as he raced through, but no whistle sounded.

Goalkeeper Darragh Carey reduced the gap to four and Ben Donoghue raced through only for Paul Groden to get his body in the way and deny him another net-shaker.

Kilmeena drew a line in the sand at that stage and with Jack Carney, Jack Mulchrone and Moore to the fore, they settled.

The icing was put on the Kilmeena cake in injury time when John McGlynn got on the end of a long ball to find the net and the best player on the pitch, Liam Moore, had the final say with a well-taken point to bring his personal tally to 1-8.
