In Castlebar

It was the case that ‘goals win games’ on Wednesday afternoon when the Castlebar students overcame their West Mayo near neighbours from Westport.

The impressive Joe Forry opened the scoring after two minutes for Gerald's when he blasted to the net after fine patient play from the County town school. Rice College replied with well-taken points from the boots of Rían Durkin, Fionn O’Cinnseala and a two-pointer from Michael McDonnell.

Gerald’s under the guidance of Eoin Sweeney, David Joyce, Michael Conroy and Diarmuid O’Connor enjoyed the majority of the possession throughout with Forry, Tiernan Brady and Ben Joyce all impressing.

A further goal from Ross Connolly saw the Castlebar school lead 2-5 to Rice College’s 0-6 at the break.

The O’Cinnseala brothers Fionn and Fiachra reduced the gap but up the other end, this year’s Mayo Minor Ben Joyce kicked a fine two-pointer which was soon followed by a goal from substitute Joe O’Reilly.

Looking in control throughout the second half, Gerald’s finished best to run out winners on an afternoon where a competitive clash took place between two proud West Mayo schools.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
