Ballinrobe CBS 2-17

In Westport

On a perfect afternoon for a game of football, the students from Rice College in Westport sent out a statement performance as they defeated Ballinrobe CBS in narrow fashion.

Rice College’s full forward line of Ben Holmes, Rían Durkin and Fionn O’Cinnseala hit a combined tally of 3-14 with just one score coming from a free.

Ballinrobe opened the scoring thanks to Rory Gilraine and Aaron Crowley’s efforts but the South Mayo men then went 22 minutes without scoring. In that period, the Westport based students kicked 1-11 with Ben Holmes causing serious problems with his physical presence. The impressive Rían Durkin hit to the net with 14 minutes gone as Rice really enjoyed a purple patch.

Going in at the break, Rice College led 1-13 to Ballinrobe’s 0-4.

The second half was a different story altogether although Fionn O’Cinsealla had the ball in the net within 90 seconds. The Robesiders responded with a green flag of their own thanks to Donagh Gilligan while moments later Ben Holmes replied with a smartly taken major.

Caelen Tansey reduced the deficit from the penalty spot for the visitors as this year's Mayo Minor Cian May kicked seven points including three two pointers. Ballinrobe’s late rally failed to materialise although they pushed the West Mayo men close.
