MAYO SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL
Knockmore 3-6
Ballintubber 0-9
In Knockmore
It mightn’t have been the most exciting game ever but Ray Dempsey and the Knockmore contingent won’t mind as they booked their spot in the last four stage.
After a slow start to the game, Knockmore opened proceedings when Darren Mc Hale raced in to get a crucial flick over goalkeeper Brendan Walsh. With an empty net ahead, Mc Hale made no mistake as he secured the major.
It took a while for the visitors to get going but Cillian O’Connor opened the Ballintubber scoring with 12 minutes played. Pearse Rutledge and the impressive Connell Dempsey tagged on well taken scores for the hosts as both teams set up in a negative approach.
As the half time whistle sounded, Knockmore led 1-3 to Ballintubber’s 0-4.
Former Mayo star Kevin Mc Loughlin entered the cauldron as a half time substitute and he had a huge impact on proceedings with some great work in the middle areas.
It was nip and tuck throughout the second half but both sides kicked numerous wides. Knockmore secured their second green flag of the day when Conor Flynn’s shot dropped into the net in a somewhat fortunate manner.
The West Mayo men reduced the deficit With thanks to Michael Plunkett and Cillian O’Connor but up the other end the Saffron and blue hit the nail in the coffin when Darren Mc Hale finished to the net after he finished a fine team move.
It’s Knockmore who have booked their spot in the final four while Ballintubber are eliminated.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
