An on-fire Kuba Callaghan was pivotal as Ballaghaderreen secured their place in the last-eight of the senior championship.

The turning point arrived when Charlestown goalkeeper Kenneth Brennan was black-carded, and Kuba Callaghan converted the penalty past stand-in Gareth O’Donnell.

Earlier, Paul Towey had a penalty saved before the 2019 finalists struck for gold through Callaghan and Matthew Connor.

Mayo star Towey battled hard to keep his side in the fray with frees and a goal, while Jack Mahon and Ben Crean also contributed, but each surge was met by Ballagh' replies.

Connor added a third goal after the restart, and Callaghan’s flawless placed-ball kicking kept Charlestown at arm’s length. Despite late resistance, Ballaghaderreen ran out worthy winners, scuppering Sarsfields' hopes of progression and leaving them battling to avoid the relegation play-offs.

A full report, plus reaction, will be carried in Tuesday's edition of The Mayo News.
