MAYO SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Belmullet 1-12
Aghamore 0-12
In Belmullet
HAVING a player at the top of his game in the team is always an advantage and Ryan O'Donoghue is the gift that keeps on giving for Belmullet.
The Mayo star regularly shoots the lights out, and on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Tallagh, he kicked six points, among them the score of the day. The ace attacker scored a stunning two-pointer with an amazing curl that would make Roberto Carlos jealous. The crowd held their breath and when the ball suddenly swirled back inside the post they raised the roof. O'Donoghue turned around and screamed into the crowd as he celebrated the crucial score.
However, O'Donoghue's biggest impact was setting up his teammates and playing them into the game. He perfectly assisted the only goal of the game when feeding the ball to Seamus Howard who raised the green flag.
Belmullet would never trail against a hard-working Aghamore team that would fight right until the end. The visitors were deprived of their centre-forward livewire Liam Lavin, who fell ill overnight and that was a huge loss to them.
Belmullet have two wins out of two now and are in the pole position as they face Breaffy in the last round.
Aghmore will need a win over Castlebar in their final group match to have a chance of progression.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News
