Mayo GAA have signalled their intention to ratify Andy Moran as manager of the senior men’s football team.

The role has been vacant since Wednesday, June 25, when Kevin McStay was relieved of his duties by the Mayo county board, and speculation has been rife on who would be the leading light for the Green and Red in 2026.

However, that rumour mill has been put firmly to bed with the announcement that former inter-county superstar forward Moran will more than likely be filling the bainisteoir bib for 2026.

Mayo GAA confirmed the news in a statement released today (Monday, August 11).

"Andy Moran and his backroom team bring a wealth of experience from both playing and coaching at the highest levels of inter-county football," the statement read. "Andy Moran has gained management and coaching experience with both Monaghan and Leitrim in recent years. Their combined knowledge, leadership, and proven track records will be invaluable in driving the continued development and success of Mayo football."

The Ballaghaderreen clubman has seen and done it all for Mayo on the pitch, winning a fistful of Connacht medals as well as a pair of All-Stars and the 2017 Footballer of the Year in his glittering career.

It is also confirmed that Paddy Tally will assist Moran on his management team. Tally, a native of Tyrone previously coached Kerry and Galway whilst he also managed Down and most recently Derry. Mayo legend Colm Boyle will also form part of Moran's backroom team.

The tricky attacker called time on his inter-county journey in 2019, and hung up the club boots in 2022. However, he returned in style for Ballagh’ in this year’s Division Two final against Aghamore, contributing two points from the bench at the age of 41.

Moran has also cut his teeth in the inter-county management game, taking over the reins from Terry Hyland in Leitrim in October 2021. During Moran’s time in time of the Wild Rose County, he brought them to Division Three, as well as guiding the under-20s to a historic county title against Mayo.

Up next for Moran was a move to serve on the backroom team with Monaghan, where he served up until the 2025 campaign, when they were knocked out of the Ulster and All-Ireland series by Donegal.

The appointment of Moran will be put forward at the next County Board meeting which will almost certainly see him officially appointed.
