Mayo and Tooreen hurler Bobby Douglas represented both the County and province across the Bank Holiday weekend when he faced off in the All Ireland Poc Fada Final.
The Mayo County goalkeeper went up against competitors at the National Final which took place at Anaverna Mountain, County Louth. Amongst the Tooreen clubman’s opposition were Cathal Dillon, Tipperary, Pearce Smyth, Down, Noel Fallon, Roscommon, Sean Og McLaren, Antrim, Cillian Kiely, Offaly, Darren Geoghegan, Louth, Pat Burke, Westmeath, Colin Ryan, Limerick. Also in the competition were former Tipperary legend, Brendan Cummins and last year’s Champion, Fionan MacKessy who is a native of Kerry but now plays inter-county hurling for Kilkenny.
Douglas finished the day in fourth spot as former Limerick hurler Colin Ryan claimed glory after he finished in second place the previous three years. Ryan claimed glory in 2021 when he won the competition for the first time. Offaly’s Cillian Kiely and Fionan Mackessy claimed second and third spots ahead of Mayo’s Bobby Douglas.
Poc Fada is Irish for "long puck". An All-Ireland Poc Fada Championship takes place annually testing the skills of many of the top Hurling and Camogie players. Competitors must puck a sliotar with a hurley over a 5km course broken into 4 stages across the Cooley Mountains playing to the top of Carn an Mhadaidh, and after a short break continue back down to the finish line.
The Final took place on the Bank Holiday Monday August 5 in County Louth.
