MAYO PRIMARY JUNIOR B FOOTBALL FINAL
Ballaghaderreen 4-11
Davitts 0-9
In Castlebar
THE Ballagh' boys took home their second county crown in seven days when they powered past Davitts in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. On Saturday last, the men in white and green won the Division 2 league title and this evening their junior team went home with the junior title.
Clichés tell us that goals win games and that was certainly the case when they found the net four times as Davitts were put to the sword in an entertaining junior clash in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The East Mayo side were nine points up at half-time after playing against the wind. Cormac Doohan and Rossa McDermott looked lively up front while Luke O'Grady and John Higgins were doing well in the middle. Davitts found scores harder to come by, but the efforts of former Mayo minor Cathal Corless gave them hope for the second half.
Ballaghaderreen's highly-impressive centre-forward Conor Moriarty shook the net with a well-hit penalty after 28 minutes and added two more goals to his tally in a 30 second salvo in the 36th minute.
That sealed the deal for the eastern side who were excellent defensively all through, and despite points from Tom Corless, Davey Hennessy and Cathal Corless there was to be no Davitts revival.
The icing was placed on a very sweet Ballagh' cake in the final minute when John Higgins found Cormac Doohan in an advanced position and the ace attacker sent a screamer into the bottom corner to bring the curtain down on a memorable evening for the white and green.
A full match report and reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
