Liam McHale has stepped away from his role as Mayo Ladies senior manager following this afternoon's win over Leitrim in Tubbercurry. Victory in the relegation play-off secured Mayo's status in the Senior Championship in 2026 and McHale announced his intention to step down immediately after the game.

The Ballina man had been in charge of Mayo for two seasons after crossing codes from Gaelic Football where he had been a selector and coach with the Mayo senior team under Kevin McStay's management.

McHale said he was honoured to manage the Mayo Ladies senior team for the past two seasons and will take great emories from his time in charge of the Green and Red.

In a well-worded statement, Mayo LGFA expressed their sincere thanks to McHale and his management team. “We extend our sincere thanks to Liam for his service to Mayo LGFA over the past two years, his lifetime of service to the county and we wish him and his management team every success in their future endeavours.”

Sinead Stagg, Mayo LGFA Chairperson was equally complimentary. “The commitment required at senior inter-county level is immense – not just from managers, coaches and the extended managerial team, but from their families too.

“We are grateful to Liam and his entire backroom team for their dedication to Mayo Ladies Football. Their work was instrumental in achieving our primary objective of maintaining senior championship status.

“Any year in the top flight of LGFA is challenging. This has been a season of huge transition for Mayo Ladies Football,” Stagg stated before congratulating those who had worn the Green and Red in 2025.

“We faced unprecedented squad changes with significant layer departures. We have seen great young talent emerging and we are immensely proud of the young players who stepped up, made their debuts and showed tremendous character throughout the campaign.”
