MAYO SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1A
Breaffy 2-16
Knockmore 2-10
In Breaffy
THE sun shone and the colours clashed in Breaffy last night as the home side defeated Knockmore in an entertaining league clash. Both sides were missing numerous big-hitters and the game was a long way removed from championship fare, but it still crackled and sparked at times.
Aidan O'Shea lined out for Breaffy and ended the game with five points as the home side enjoyed a deserved victory.
Ray Dempsey sent out a Knockmore team shorn of many of his star players and they started slowly. The opposite could be said for the home boys who roared out of the traps. Hard-working centre-half-forward Pierce Deane kicked two points in the opening moments and O'Shea did likewise a few minutes later.
At the other end, Sean Holmes, Ryan Casey and the impressive Caolan Hokins raised white flags from limited chances but Breaffy went into overdrive and raced away from the guests.
Conor O'Shea kicked a two-pointer, John Deane and Daire Morrin added white flags before Pierece Deane finished smartly to the net to leave the home side almost out of sight.
However, just before half-time, Knockmore were awarded a penalty for what referee Kevin Connelly said was a foot-block when Hopkins went for goal. Conor Flynn slipped the spot-kick to the net and the gap was back to seven at the interval,1-3 to 1-10.
The visitors began the new half on the front foot with Hopkins to the fore. He kicked three points and Dylan Coleman added another as the Knockmore supporters made themselves heard, but Breaffy never panicked.
Aidan O'Shea and John Deane stopped the rot with well-earned points for the home side but Knockmore weren't done.
Charlie Burke grabbed a goal and Hopkins split the sticks to leave just two points between them as time ticked away, but Breaffy are a solid outfit these days and finished strongly.
Pierce Deane landed a free, Rory Martyn finished Judge Lavin's effort to the net and goalkeeper Jack Livingstone converted a long-range free to seal the deal and send Sean Deane's men back to the top spot in Division 1A.
