A young man with strong Mayo links shot the lights out for Longford at the weekend as the Shannonsiders defeated Carlow 1-20 to 1-15 in the Tailtean Cup. Matthew Carey from Clonguish kicked 15 points for the team managed by former Mayo U-21 boss Michael Solan and was instrumental in his side's well-deserved victory.
Carey is the son of former Kiltane and Mayo attacker Kieran and is one of the brightest prospects in the game. He has helped his club to unprecedented underage glory in recent seasons and has blossomed since stepping up to senior football.

Matthew is the first cousin of Mayo Minor forward Tony Carey from Ardagh.
