MAYO SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1A

Castlebar Mitchels 1-23

Belmullet 0-1

In Castlebar

HOW does one put words on this? The scoreline probably says it all.

Castlebar Mitchels produced style, speed and 24 sparkling scores in Josie Munnelly Park last night – Belmullet kicked one point from a free.

The word before the game suggested that Mitchels mightn't be running on full throttle, given the fact that there had been a club wedding the day before, but nothing could be further from the truth. Kevin Filan might not have had a full hand to pick from but the team he put on the pitch literally ran riot.

Belmullet, who were also missing a number of front-liners started well with Luke O'Reilly hitting the post with a goal chance, but that was as good as it got for the Erris men.

Mitchels cut loose with Fergal Durkan, Eoghan O'Reilly and Paddy Heneghan dominating matters around while the middle with the half-back-line of Gavin Forry, Tomas Waldron and Shane Cunningham excelled.

However, the real sparkle was in attack. Mark Cunningham, Cian Walsh and Paul Walsh were outstanding. Between the three of them, they kicked 14 points in the first half. They pulled Belmullet apart time after time and when Waldron came forward to kick 1-2 and Forry and Heneghan kicked two apiece – amazingly, Castlebar were 1-20 to no score clear at half time.

Belmullet had the stiff breeze on their backs in the second half and came out full of vim and vigor.

Daithi Cosgrove kicked a point from a free after 34 minutes but amazingly, they wouldn't score again.

Mitchels were 22 points up but they refused to sit back despite facing into the big wind. They didn't give the guests a second to dwell on the ball and played a high-press which allowed them keep Belmullet scoreless for the rest of the evening.

Forry, Cian Walsh and Mark Cunningham added points for the home side before the final whistle in a game very well referee by Garryowen McMahon who implemented the new rules very well.
