MAYO SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1A ROUND THREE

DAVITTS 1-12

ARDNAREE 0-3

In Ballindine

With a quarter of the game to go and hosts Davitts five to the good, it looked all but certain that Ardnaree would be heading home empty-handed.

That assumption was copper-fastened after 43 minutes in when veteran wing-back Thomas Waldron stepped up to fire into the back of the net and put the result beyond doubt.

It wasn’t a perfect performance, and the men from the borderline will have a bit to work on as they look ahead to a joust with Breaffy in their next league outing.

However, they showed more than enough to maneuver past an Ardnaree side who showed little resistance.

Ardnaree took a while to put a point on the board, and by the time Seaghan Duffy tapped over a simple free, Liam Nyland’s black-clad troops were already six to the good.

The hosts were the first to alter the scoreboard when Ciaran Treacy turned on a sixpence to find his range. Dylan Gallagher converted a placed ball moments later, before a pair of Shane Treacy scores in succession pushed the lead out to four.

A mighty outside-of-the-boot two-pointed effort from Waldron ensured a firm ascendancy with a quarter gone, and had it not been for the brace of simple frees from Duffy, there’d have been nothing to smile about for Rory Clarke and his backroom side at half-time.

The visitors actually opened the scoring in Act Two, but four points would be as close as they got. Gallagher clipped a free between the sticks before Waldron showed his clinical nature to put the duel firmly to bed.
