CONNACHT U-21 CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 4

SLIGO 2-16 MAYO 5-22

In Sligo

Mayo are through to their first Connacht U-20 final since 2022 after an impressive win over Sligo in Markievicz Park this evening.

The outstanding Claremorris duo of Darragh Beirne and Niall Hurley amassed 4-10 between them as Mayo had nine unique scorers on the night. It was Mayo’s fourth win from four games in this provincial campaign and sees them top the group and secure their place in the final.

Mayo had a steady start, outscoring the Yates men by two points in the first ten minutes.

The guests then hit 1-3 on the bounce, with the goal coming from full-forward Niall Hurley.

Sligo threatened in fits and starts, but had no fluidity or cohesion to their attack, and kicked 0-5 before the break while Mayo finished with 3-9.

A two-pointer from Tom Lydon and goals from Cathal Keaveney and Darragh Beirne were among the first-half highlights for Mayo, who finished the half strong to lead by thirteen points at the break.

Sligo had some good moments in the second half, exploiting rare Mayo defensive lapses to raise green flags through Dara Mostyn and Connor Flynn.

Mayo made hay off a poor Sligo kickout and added a goal a piece from Beirne and Hurley to dismiss the Yeats men with fifteen points to spare.

A full report and reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
