A new TG4 show is set to shine a light on the stories behind the silverware in Mayo GAA.

‘Scéalta na gCorn’, a series which travels around the country examining the history of famous sporting trophies, is returning for its third series, and in episode five, they’re pitching up in Mayo.

A trio of trophies will be under the spotlight.

The first cup on the agenda is the Paddy Moclair Cup. Mayo GAA aficionados are well aware of the significance of the trophy handed out to the kingpins of men's club football.

This show will dive deeper into the man for whom the iconic trophy was named. Moclair was a totemic full-forward for the Green and Red, and his honours list is as long as your arm.

He is the envy of many in the county as he is one of a select few to have tasted All-Ireland glory from the county. Alongside that, he has nine county titles to his name, making it entirely fitting for the trophy to be named in his honour in 1971.

Next on the agenda for the show’s presenter, Gráinne McElwain, is the Charles Haughey Cup. Castlebar man Charles Haughey was a seminal figure in Irish politics, and his influence has seen him rewarded with the national rounders trophy named in his honour.

It is, therefore, fitting that the trophy, which has been given to the reigning All-Ireland champions, currently resides in his home county with Breaffy.

Finally, the O’Mara Cup will take the spotlight on the national airwaves. The cup has been traversing South Mayo for 85 years now and was named after Stephen O’Mara, who established a bacon factory in Claremorris in 1930.
