CONNACHT LGFA U-16 CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1
Galway 1-4
Mayo 2-14
In Dunmore
A sparkling Mayo display matched the weather conditions in Dunmore on Saturday as the Green and Red decisively defeated the home side in front of a healthy attendance. However, the scoreboard is somewhat harsh on Galway who were much more competitive than the final tally suggests.
The sun shone out of the heavens and a stiff breeze blew across the pitch as the two talented sides locked horns.
Mayo hit the front early and never looked likely to be caught as they built up a comprehensive lead by the end of the first half. Aoibhinn McNamara, Katie Hughes, Mikayla McLoughlin and Emily Duffy all kicked early scores as the guests led by seven before wing-back Niamh Ní Ghionnáin came forward to raise Galway's first white flag.
Eva Daly doubled the home side's tally soon after but Mayo were in charge with the full-back line of Isabelle Basquille, Leah McNamara and Sophie Tiernan highly-impressive.
At the other end, McLoughlin, Saerlaith Dillon, Emily Duffy and the tireless Erin Higgins ensured that Galway found it very hard to build any foundation.
In the middle Chloe Fahey and Ailbhe Ferguson kept Mayo moving forward and the guests were well-worth their big 0-11 to 0-2 lead at the interval.
Galway looked to get back into it after the resumption with centre-half-forward Molly McGrath looking to inspire a comeback, but Mayo held firm with Grace Bailey, Amy Doherty and Siofra McGuinness excellent on the Mayo half-back-line as the growing wind made scoring more difficult. Galway created two goal chances but Meabh Lavin produced flying saves to keep her line intact and Mayo powered on.
They were 0-13 to 0-3 clear after 50 minutes when Carnacon's Anna Burton came off the bench and made an immediate impact. She crashed home a goal with her first touch and added another a minute later.
That ended the game as a contest and Galway had to be happy with a goal from wing-back Siobhan Conneely in the final minute.
