Damage sustained to the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan following Storm Éowyn Pic: Sportsfile
CONNACHT GAA CEO John Prenty has said that costs are being finalised for rebuilding the Connacht GAA Air Dome, which he expects to reopen in the autumn.
Speaking to The Mayo News, Prenty could not estimate the cost of rebuilding the facility, which was destroyed by Storm Éowyn on January 24.
Last year, Prenty said that building an identical facility from scratch would cost multiples of what it cost to build the Air Dome, which opened in 2020 at a cost of €3.1 million. Over €2 million of this was financed through government grants.
“At the minute we are coming towards a final preparation on replacing the Dome, which hopefully will be back in action by late September or early October,” said Prenty.
“We are working with the insurance people on that,” he added when asked about the potential rebuild costs.
“There is a huge amount of damage done around the place that hasn’t been finalised. We’re confident that we’ll have enough support to rebuild and replace the Dome.”
In 2023 alone, the Air Dome drew 182,000 visitors. The facility was one of the largest of its kind in the world and was visited by a number of professional sports teams.
