Mayo U-20 manager Peadar Garinder with selector Mark Ryan during then 2024 All-Ireland U-20 B Championship semi-final against Down Pic: The Mayo News
THIS time, it seems the Mayo U-20s are really onto something.
Having peaked with last year’s round one win over Galway, Peadar Gardiner’s team appears to have hit their stride with a round two win over the same opposition.
“They played really well, battled really hard and showed great resilience,” the Crossmolina man told The Mayo News.
“Galway are an outstanding team and it could have went either way on the night. We got the bounce of the ball tonight, just very proud of the players and just move onto next Wednesday night straight away against Leitrim.”
Mayo defeated Roscommon in MacHale Park in the first round with plenty to improve on - mainly their shot conversion rate.
“Obviously our conversion rate was low,” Gardiner acknowledged. “We tried to work on our shooting, our conversion was much higher tonight. We tried to work on our kickouts and our general work rate and we just focused on ourselves. They worked; for most parts of tonight, it worked. But [it was] a difficult game; it could have went either way.”
While one set of supporters went home disgruntled, this was surely as good an advertisement for the new rules as there has been in Connacht.
“Unbelievable. The new rules are excellent. It’s competitive, there’s long kickouts, there’s great shooting,” Gardiner said, highlighting Darragh Beirne’s late worldie.
“For U-20s, you need to go out and let them play, I think, and enjoy their football. The new rules obviously suited both teams and it was a great game of football for supporters.”
It cuts both ways, though. Mayo won the game with a two-pointer, Galway but made a few hay bales with the long-range shots and extra space.
“There was a big breeze there tonight and I think it’s very exciting for everyone in general, the new rules. I don’t think you hear many people have any issues with it. It was a great game of football.”
Mayo face Leitrim in the third round of the Connacht U-20 Championship in Hastings Insurance MacHale tomorrow (Wedenesday) at 6.15pm.
