SWINFORD

A five-minute scoring spree from Kerry at the start of the second proved enough for them to secure their fourth league win, leaving winless Mayo on the verge of falling through the trapdoor into Division Two.

Mayo brought a lot of positives in the first half, keeping the ball and playing with a sense of intelligence when put under fierce pressure by the visitors from the southwest, as well as restricting them to four points with only one from play.

Going in two down at half-time certainly gave those in Swinford hope, especially given the wind on their backs after the changeover.

However, that’s not what transpired as Kerry moved through the gears and showed their class, putting the hosts to the sword with 1-3 in quick succession, establishing a dominance that would last until the final whistle.

Mayo, in the absence of their fulcrum at the top of the pitch, Sinead Walsh, couldn't cause many headaches to Mark Bourke's Kerry side. By the time Síofra O'Shea notched her 53rd-minute goal via an unfortunate Mayo error to put her side eleven to the good, any doubts of the result were extinguished. By the time the full-time whistle shrilled, the game was long over.

Now, with two games left, the sense of a miracle being needed to avoid playing Division Two football in 2026 has only heightened for Mayo.
