GAA clubs all across Mayo are busily preparing for the coming season and their plans became clearer this week when dates for commencement of league and championship competitions were announced.

Delegates at Wednesday's county board meeting in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park were told that the Mayo football leagues will begin on the first weekend of April while the senior, junior and intermediate championships will start early in August.

It was also announced that draws for those championships will take place on February 26 in Castlebar.

Mayo GAA Secretary Ronan Kirrane said a huge amount of work had gone into the drawing up of the club calendar and a number of meetings had taken place with club representatives. Those gatherings had come up with a number of recommendations around the running of the championships and primary among those were: Two weeks between championship rounds, avoid football and hurling clashes, start the competitions in early August and plan for some Friday night matches.

Kirrane also confirmed dates for the opening rounds of the football championships.

"The junior championship has 14 teams - two groups of five and one group of four. Therefore, two groups have to start earlier than the other. That means the two five-team groups will play their opening round on the first weekend in August. The senior and intermediate championships will start on the following weekend, August 9 and 10," he added.
