THE old saying 'A good start is half the battle' certainly didn't ring true in Bekan today when Headford had the ball in the net in the first minute but were over-run by Ballyhaunis later in the afternoon.

The East Mayo boys took a little time to get rolling, but when they built up a head of steam they powered past the Galway students. Ballyhaunis were 1-6 to 1-3 clear at the interval before putting the pedal to the metal after the restart to win comfortably. The win continues the rise through the ranks to Ballyhaunis CS who won the provincial C title last year.

There were no particular stand-out players on the winning team, which says a lot about the squad strength of the group coached by David Mitchell and David Delaney. Conor Grogan kicked some classy scores from wing-forward, Derry Óg Cox at the heart of the attack showed why he's so highly-rated, Adam Kelly and Mark Feeney were mobile and productive in the middle, Jarlath Concannon mixed powerful defensive play with attacking drives while goalkeeper Eamon Monaghan pulled off two spectacular saves.

The result was decided long before the end despite the best efforts of a Headford side who never let their heads drop.

A full report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
