St Colman’s College have knocked reigning Connacht senior A champions St Geralds out of the provincial championship.

Dominant for most of the game, the Claremorris-based school reacehd the knock-out stages by notching their second win from three games. St Gerald’s exit the group alongside Ballinrobe Community School, who were beaten by Summerhill College today (Tuesday, January 14).

This game took some time to get going and there was rarely more than a point between the sides until St Colman’s pulled away with scores from Mark Noonan, Jake Mullin, Ronan Kelly (a free) and Darragh Beirne to close out the half with a 0-7 0-4 lead.

The contest got a shot in the arm when Jude Lavin scored a penalty to give St Gerald’s a one-point lead that was quickly doubled by Patrick Garvey.

St Colman’s replied with 1-2 on the bounce, with Darragh Beirne teeing up Seán O’Connell for a fine goal in the 41st minute.

The south Mayo school were on top in the breaking ball and at midfield and outscored St Gerald’s 0-6 0-4 to leave three between them in injury time.

The Castlebar-based school floated one last hopeful ball into the square in the dying second but St Colman’s emerged with the ball and emerged victorious.

A full report plus reaction from the St Colman’s camp will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
