Delegates back MacHale Park hosting rugby game

Hastings Insurance MacHale Park could host Connacht in historic interprovincial rugby game

A proposal for Hastings Insurance MacHale Park to host its first-ever game of rugby received a ‘positive’ reception when it was put before delegates at the November meeting of the Mayo GAA county board.

Mayo GAA has applied to host the interprovincial clash of Connacht and Munster at the Castlebar venue on March 29.

The county board would receive compensation for hosting the game. If sanctioned, it would be the first professional rugby game ever to be played in MacHale Park.

One delegate who attended last Monday’s Mayo GAA county board meeting described the reaction to the proposal as ‘positive’.

Connacht Rugby have declined to comment on the matter.

MacHale Park would not be the first GAA venue to host a rugby game. Both Croke Park and Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork have hosted several high-profile soccer and rugby games in the past.

This comes as Connacht Rugby are undergoing a €45 million redevelopment of their home ground.

Formerly known as The Sportsground, the Dexcom Stadium will hold over 12,000 spectators when fully complete.

Speaking on Midwest Radio this morning, former Mayo footballer Alan Dillon said Mayo was ‘brilliantly positioned’ to host in terms of geography and facilities.

The Fine Gael TD said the commercial revenue generated from hosting other sports in MacHale Park could reduce the financial burden on Mayo GAA clubs incurred by the development of facilities.

“They’ve been asked to do a lot in the last number of years,” Minister Dillon said.
