GARRYMORE GAA Club have expressed sympathy following the passing of legendary Galway footballer, Noel Tierney, at the age of 82.
Tierney, who passed away in recent days, was one of the standout players on the Galway team that won three All-Ireland titles in a row between 1964 and 1966.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest full-backs of his generation, the Milltown native began his playing career with Garrymore and was selected for county Minor trials.
He went on to enjoy an illustrious career with Milltown and Galway and won Footballer of The Year in 1964 at the age of 22. He also won a Minor All-Ireland title with Galway in 1960 and played on the Milltown team that won their first-ever senior county title in 1971.
He won five Connacht Championships in total with Galway and a National League title in 1965, plus two Railway Cups with Connacht, including as captain in 1969.
While he commanded legendary status in Galway, Tierney was well-known in the south Mayo region.
He will repose at St Joseph’s Church, Milltown Wednesday evening (5-7 pm).
His Funeral Mass will take on Thursday at noon. He will be laid to rest in Kilgevrin Cemetery.
May he rest in peace.
